Smartphones to drive online retail sales

Increased surfing of the internet by smartphone will boost online retail sales in 2012, a study suggests.

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland polled 27 online retailers and found that 60 per cent expect sales to rise more than ten per cent this year.

The study found 15 per cent of retailers expect growth to rise more than a quarter. Just 12 per cent predicted sales would drop.

Researchers said online sales growth reflected the growing popularity of internet surfing via smartphones.

Most online retailers – 80 per cent – reported sales growth for 2011, with a quarter reporting sales rose 25 per cent and a third reporting a more than 10 per cent increase.
